The Quince has been cultivated for a long time and after its introduction to England was commonly grown in the 16th to 18th centuries, when it was usually used for making quince marmalade. It has bright golden-yellow, pear shaped fruit that have an excellent flavour. The fruit ripen quite early and will keep well. They are ideal for use in flavouring apple pies, baking, stewing and can make a fine wine.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Avoid wet or waterlogged areas!
  • Hardiness: Hardy. 
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Cydonia 'Meeches Prolific' grows to be a small tree.
    • Height: 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft)
    • Spread: 3m (10 ft)
  • Notes: The fruit can be picked in early autumn for use in October and November.
