An unusual, strong growing evergreen shrub with scented flowers in winter, introduced from Jiangxi in Eastern China by Roy Lancaster. The leaves are dark green, glossy and oval, sometimes quite large - up to 9 cm long. Masses of scented pink tinged white flowers appear on the branches in winter or very early spring.

Superb evergreen shrub ideal for planting near in a sheltered spot near a back door or frequently used path where the scent can be appreciated in the winter.


  • Position: Warm and sheltered in sun or shade.
  • Soil: Moist, well drained, fertile soil. Tolerates fairly dry soil conditions once established.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat Hardy. Sarcococca orientalis requires shelter from cold winter winds and benefits from protection in severe cold.
  • Flowering Period: December - March.
  • Flower Colour:Pink tinged white
