Native to parts of the North-east USA, Rhus typhina is a tough, hardy deciduous shrub or eventually small, often very branching tree with long pinnate (feather-like) leaves which are bright green in summer, turning vivid shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn before falling. The young branches are often covered with fine reddish-brown hair, looking like stags horns, hence the common name.

A vigorous, suckering shrub this is most suitable to positions with lots of sun and plenty of space.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Rhus typhina will tolerate poor soils and reasonably dry conditions once established.
  • Hardiness: Hardy
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Rhus typhina grows to be a very large, rounded branching shrub or eventually small tree.
    • Height: 6 m (16 - 20 ft).
