An unusual evergreen shrub or small tree native to Chile and Argentina, Rhaphithamnus spinosus has glossy green leaves, sharp thorns and pale blue flowers in late spring. The pretty flowers are followed by very ornamental, purple to bright blue fruit later in the year.

A fascinating shrub for a warm, sheltered garden. Can be grown in a large container.

  • Position: Very sheltered in full sun.
  • Soil: Acid, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Rhaphithamnus spinosus requires protection from cold winter winds and is most suitable to warm, south or west facing gardens.

  • Habit: Medium sized, rounded shrub - perhaps taller in exceptionally warm areas.
    • Height: up to 3 m (10 ft)
    • Spread: 2 m (6 ft)
  • Notes: Rhaphithamnus spinosus appreciates the extra shelter given by growing it against a wall or fence.
