Named after Alfred Rehder who first raised it in 1879, Pterocarya x rehderiana is somewhat similar to Pterocarya fraxinifolia in appearance, but with more finely divided leaves (and more leaflets). The leaves are lush green in spring / summer, turning butter yellow before falling in autumn. Like the other wingnuts, this has spectacular, drooping catkins when established in late summer.

Hardier and slightly faster growing than either of its parents, Pterocarya x rehderiana grows to be a majestic garden tree.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil. Pterocarya x rehderiana is particularly fond of damp or wet soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Large branching, suckering tree.
    • Height: 25 m (82 ft)
    • Spread: 20 m (65 ft)
  • Notes: This plant is a fascinating hybrid between Pterocarya stenoptera (Chinese Wingnut) and Pterocarya fraxinifolia (Caucasian Wingnut). Pterocarya x rehderiana have vigorous root systems and should not be planted close to drains or house foundations.
