Native to parts of Eastern Asia, Phellodendron amurense is unusual in the UK and has pinnate (feather-like) pale green leaves which turn shades of yellow and bronze before falling in autumn. The leaves are aromatic. Established trees develop a rounded crown and bark a little similar to that of a Quercus suber (Cork oak). 

Phellodendron amurense is best suited to a position in full sun or light dappled shade with some shelter from cold winter winds.

  • Soil: Fertile, moist or well drained soil. Phellodendron amurense usually dislikes waterlogged sites.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Phellodendron amurense grows to be a small tree, generally upright initially and more spreading and rounded once established..
    • Height: 8 - 10 m (26 - 30 ft) / or up to 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft) in 10 years.
    • Spread: 6 - 8 m (20 - 26 ft) / or up to 2.5 - 3 m (8 - 10 ft) in 10 years
