An unusual and stunning, conical small or eventually medium sized tree with dark green summer leaves which turn fiery shades of gold, orange and red in autumn before falling.

Although hardy, Nyssa sylvatica 'Wisley Bonfire' seems to prefer positions sheltered from strong winds. Although growing in pH neutral soils, the best red and orange autumn colour will be seen on trees planted in acid or lime free soil.

A lovely tree in time but is usually not quick to establish and therefore will not be for instant gratification.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade. Best autumn colour in a position with plenty of sun.
  • Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Nyssa sylvatica 'Wisley Bonfire' requires a reasonably acid soil to produce its most vivid autumn colour and grow well.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Appreciates shelter from cold winter winds.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Small or eentually medium sized,  conical tree.
    • Height: up to 10 m (26 - 32 ft).
    • Spread: 6 - 8 m (20 - 26 ft).
  • Notes: Nyssa do not transplant well and should be left undisturbed once planted in position.
