Nyssa sylvatica is a small or medium sized, broadly columnar, deciduous tree grown for its fantastic autumn colour which is native to parts of North America and Canada. The dark green leaves turn vivid shades of yellow, orange or red before falling, making it an excellent tree for autumn colour.
Although hardy, Nyssa sylvatica seems to prefer positions sheltered from strong winds. Although growing in pH neutral soils, the best red and orange autumn colour will be seen on trees planted in acid or lime free soil.
This Nyssa grows to be a lovely small tree in time but is usually not quick to establish and therefore will not be for instant gratification.
- Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
- Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Nyssa sylvatica requires a reasonably acid soil to produce its most vivid autumn colour and grow well.
- Hardiness: Hardy. Nyssa sylvatica appreciates shelter from cold winter winds.
- Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
- Habit: Small, elegant branching tree.
- Height: up to 10 m (32 ft).
- Spread: 8 m (26 ft).
- Notes: Nyssa do not transplant well and should be left undisturbed once planted in position.
