An unusual, upright evergreen shrub or eventually very small tree with leathery, dark green leaves and heavily scented creamy white flowers in late spring to early summer once established.

Prefers mild, sheltered areas in the UK and not suitable for cold, exposed positions.


  • Position: Sheltered in full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist, lime-free or acidic soil.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Requires shelter from wind and protection in cold winters in some areas. Most suitable for mild areas and sheltered urban gardens.
  • Flowering Period: April - May
  • Flower Colour: Creamy white
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Eventually a small spreading, branching tree.
    • Height: 4 - 5 m (13 - 16ft) - can eventually grow to be taller than this in very mild areas.
    • Spread: 3 - 4m (10 - 13 ft).
  • Notes: Native to parts of China and the Himalayas.
