Magnolia

In cultivation, most Magnolias are straight forward; although many grow well in neutral soil, some really need lime free conditions. The early flowering species need protection from early morning sun to avoid the flowers being damaged by late frosts. Most species and hybrids flower better in sites offering afternoon sun. The larger leaved spedies and cultivars need protection from wind.

Many varieties are amongst our best spring flowering plants. Some species such as M. grandiflora and M. sieboldii flower in summer and enrich our gardens with their lovely perfumes. Young plants benefit from protection from late frosts in April and May by the use of fleece etc. as the young foliage is susceptible to frost damage.
