Corylus avellana 'Medusa'

New to us, this is an unusual medium sized shrub once established with twisted and contorted stems. A smaller and more compact plant than the similar Corylus avellana 'Contorta' once mature. Grows well in a large container.

The summer leaves are large and dark green in colour turning yellow and bronze before falling in autumn. Slender catkins appear on the branches in late winter.

The branches are also more flexible than those of the 'Contorta'. ! Grows well in a large container.

• Position: Full sun or partial shade.
• Soil: Most fertile soils but avoid waterlogged areas.
• Hardiness: Hardy.
• Flowering Period: January to March (Catkins).
• Rate of Growth: Slow.
• Habit: Corylus avellana 'Medusa'  grows to be a medium sized  densely branching shrub with contorted, twisting stems.
  • Height: 2 - 2.5 m (6 - 8 ft) 
  • Spread: 2 - 2.5 m (6 - 8 ft).
