A stunning shrub with dark, wine red winter stems and dark green leaves in spring which slowly turn purple-black as they mature into summer and autumn. Ideally prune back hard in late winter/early Spring each year to 30 - 40 cm to promote branching.

Best foliage and stem colour usually seen when in a position with plenty of sun.

  • Soil: Any reasonably well drained soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Cornus alba 'Nightfall' grows to be a medium sized or eventually large shrub over time but can be pruned hard yearly if required.
    • Height:  1 - 1.5 m (3 - 5 ft) if pruned yearly or 2 - 3 m (6 - 10 ft) if unpruned.
    • Spread:  1 - 1.5 m (3 - 5 ft) if pruned yearly or 2 - 3 m (6 - 10 ft) if unpruned.
