A popular and beautiful small tree with cream variegated leaves and distinct tiers of branches once established. The leaves are dappled with white and cream variegation and in summer, clusters of small, white flowers appear on the branches.

Cornus controversa 'Variegata' is a classic garden plant which will develop a strongly tiered habit.

The handsome tiered branching habit take takes 1 - 2 years to start to develop and so best for patient gardeners.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade..
  • Soil: Any well drained fertile soil. Avoid wet or waterlogged soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. Best shape once established with some shelter from strong winds.
  • Flowering Period: June.
  • Flower Colour: White
  • Rate of Growth: Slow growing initially then Moderate.
  • Habit: Small tree with a handsome tiered shape once established.
    • Height: 10 m (32 ft) / [up to 2.5m (8 ft) in ten years]
    • Spread: 6 m (20 ft) / [2m (6 ft) in ten years]
  • Pruning:After planting, look for a strongly growing stem developing after about two to four years, perhaps growing at an odd angle but obviously much more vigorous than the normal shoots.

Train this stem vertically (usually up a thin bamboo cane or similar) to form the trunk and basis of the tiered structure. Some plants occasionally produce two or even three of these vigorous "leaders", in this case remove all but the most central one.

  • Notes: This plant is similar to the lovely Cornus alternifolia 'Argentea' in appearance, only more vigorous, larger and perhaps slightly more robust.
