An unusual selection, Arbutus 'Marina' is evergreen and has large, glossy leaves (much larger than those of a Arbutus unedo) and racemes of creamy white flowers in autumn. These flowers are followed by colourful strawberry-like fruit. Established specimens develop ornamental, peeling, mahogany coloured bark.

  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil. Arbutus are reasonably tolerant of chalky soils but will grow better in slightly acidic conditions.
  • Hardiness: Hardy. This plant is wind tolerant in coastal areas but prefers some shelter from the wind in cold gardens
  • Flowering Period: September - November.
  • Flower Colour: White flushed with pink
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Eventually a small branching tree with a densely branching, rounded crown. A slightly larger tree than the more familiar Arbutus unedo.
    • Height: up to 8 m (26 ft)
    • Spread: 8 m (26 ft)
  • Notes: Arbutus 'Marina' initially can grow with a branching, spreading habit in the UK but can be trained to produce an upright stem over time if required.
