A lovely evergreen plant with aromatic bark, Trochodendron aralioides has apple-green, glossy, leathery leaves with long stalks which can be found clustered at the tips of branches. Interesting racemes of bright green, petalless flowers appear on the branches in late spring and early summer.

Trochodendron aralioides is an unusual, surprisingly hardy, large shrub or small tree which can be grown well in a large container!


  • Position: Sheltered in full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Trochodendron aralioides will not grow well in shallow, chalky soils.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Trochodendron aralioides requires protection from cold winter winds.
  • Flowering Period: April - June.
  • Flower Colour: Green
  • Rate of Growth: Very slow.
  • Habit: Eventually a branching large shrub or small tree in a good position.
    • Height: up to 6 m (20 ft)
    • Spread: 4 m (13 ft)
  • Notes: Trochodendron aralioides is very slow growing and can take many years to reach the above height.
