A spectacular and rare species, Magnolia wilsonii has pendulous downwards facing, white, fragrant flowers with dark crimson centers in midsummer. When established it can have masses of flowers and create a very dramatic effect!

Magnolia wilsonii is most attractive when planted in a lightly shaded, slightly raised situation from where the overhanging flowers can be best appreciated!


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Most moist, fertile soils. Magnolia wilsonii will tolerate chalky soils reasonably well.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Flower Colour: White with a dark crimson centre
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Magnolia wilsonii grows to be a small tree with a slightly pendulous habit and rounded crown.
    • Height: up to 6 m (20 ft)
    • Spread: 4 m (13 ft)

Further Information

Magnolia wilsonii is native to Szechuan and Yunnan in Western China from where it was introduced by Ernest Wilson in 1908. 'Chinese Wilson' was born in Chipping Campden in 1876 and became one of the most famous of all plant hunters, eventually, after breathtaking trips around the world, dying tragically in a car crash in Boston, U.S.A. in 1930.
